This work was inspired by letter writers to my local newspaper who wrote in opposition to marriage equality during the lead up to the non-binding postal survey on same-sex marriage.

Claiming to represent everyday people going about everyday lives it seemed to me they were inordinately preoccupied with the activities of others.

The title comes in part from a friend whose elderly relative would “put her thoughts elsewhere” when a situation or notion was unsavoury, and from the title of one of the letters in the opinion pages.
